Newcastles away win on Tuesday night saw us keep our 100% pre-season record in a bad tempered game…Incidents involving Habib Beye and later, Fabricio Collocinni overshadowed what can only be described as “heated”
Huddersfield were the better side in the opening exchanges, but for all the possesson, shots on target were few and far between.
As half time arrived with honours even, Habib Beye and Huddersfield Captain, Peter Clark, had to be pulled apart, as the players entered the tunnel, Calderwood got himself involved before Police managed to break the dispute.
Our goal came on the 68th minute as Kevin Nolan latched on to a through ball to slot past keeper Smithies.
The appearance of Teenager Samuel Adjei, who joined Newcastle in January from Sweden on 73 minutes was met with applause from the 1600 travelling fans, a young lad that looks to have a decent touch on him.
The game finished up 0-1 to us, Colocinni getting himself involved in another incident as the final whistle blew, could we be correct in suggesting that this type of fight is what we might be needing for the coming season?
In attendance again, was Ken Shepherd, a fan, or deeply involved in a consortium? We’ll bring you news here as we hear it, and not make it up as we go along!!
Speaking after the game, Lee Clark said;
“I thought we passed the ball around pretty well in the first half but, in the second, our retention was not what I wanted and we gave it away too easily,” said the boss, who has Peter Clarke named as club captain.
“We had to put a lot of effort in against quality opposition who made us work hard, so our fitness levels will have improved a great deal, especially as we had to chase the ball for quite a lot of the second half.
“When we did get on the ball I thought we created two or three chances which we might have capitalised on and I’ve said to the lads that we just need to show a bit more belief in certain situations and we will be fine.”
