NUFC v Plymouth Argyle – Replay Preview

Plymouth Preview

Newcastle welcome Argyle for their 2nd visit this season looking to repeat the result of the only other FA Cup draw between these 2 teams – ultimately a home win for the Toon on their way to the final in 1905.

It promises to be an emotional visit to St James’ from two protégés of Sir Bobby Robson, Paul Mariner. Alongside him will be John Carver, facing a warm welcome from the home supporters as the only former Newcastle manager, albeit as a caretaker, with a 100% record.

Both managers have their own history in this competition and will fully appreciate the value of a result tonight. Mariner will want to maintain the form that has seen Plymouth unbeaten since before Christmas with Hughton seeking to set up a run of important home games.

Larrieu should continue in goal, with defensive options limited in front of him. The back line up should include Duguid, scorer at St James’ earlier in the season, with Johnson one of two squad members on African Nations Cup duty. Hungarian international, Timar will be on standby, with Blake on loan from Cardiff eligible to play. Sawyer could also figure.

Midfield boast an array of options, with one of the several Icelandic internationals in this league, Arneson becoming a pivotal player possibly out. Captain, Welsh international Carl Fletcher, should lead, with Alan Judge making a two goal impact against Reading. Clark and Summerfield battle for the last slots.

Up front, the expected threat is from Kiwi striker, Rory Fallon, who could be accompanied by the returning Bradley Wright-Phillips, although Jamie Mackie is out. Ashley Barnes is also knocking on the door.

Without a game last weekend, and needing match fitness before West Brom, Hughton may make changes. Krul will hope for a start in goal. In front of him, Kadar may retain his place in central defence after an impressive display at Home Park. Enrique should be recalled with Taylor and Simpson fighting it out at right back.

In midfield, options include giving father again, Pancrate another start with Guthrie keen to move back out rto the right if Nolan is also recalled. Alan Smith is a slight doubt, with Butt available to cover.

Forward options might still be rotated, although supporters will want to see Ranger get a run in the side, with memories of Waddle breaking his own home scoring duck in the FA Cup at a similar age. Ameobi looks to add to his tally, with Carroll, a scorer in the home league match, and Lovenkrands also knocking on the door.

Referee for the occasion is Andy d’Urso, who has seen Newcastle win both home against Peterborough and away against Palace, both by 2 goal margins. He was last here in an FA Cup match to witness Shearer’s 200th goal for the club – what price another landmark for Ranger or Smith? His record at St James is 6 home wins and one away.

The record at St James’ very much favours the home team, with Plymouth’s only win at St James’ being in September 1961
